Newark in Photos

Photographers of all aesthetics, themes, and hailing from all neighborhoods either have studios in our city or find it to be an inspiration. We’ve received countless submissions over the past few months. Here are some of our favorites:

“Farasha”, a mosaic by Ameerah Shabazz-Bilal. Shabazz-Bilal runs a women’s creative group. She shot each of the photos that comprise the mosaic. The work is meant to show positive images of muslim women.
“Anniyah”, also a work by Ameerah Shabazz-Bilal, composed by the same method and with the same purpose. Shabazz-Bilal is a Newark native and current Newark public school teacher.
Newark photographer Charles David snapped this shot Downtown during one of the winter’s snow storms. A little dusting won’t keep us inside! David is the founder of Elevate Welcome Reimagine (EWR), a full service promotional and entertainment company based in the city.
DJ Louie Vega keeps the crowd vibing on April 12, 2024 at the Heart Ballroom on Bloomfield Avenue. Photo also by Charles David.
Bloomfield based photographer Jason DiPietro snapped this serene scene at Branch Brook Park. Two visitors admire the scenery (or search the water for a lost item), with the spires of Newark’s Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart visible in the background. The statue in the foreground is a tribute to Fredrick Law Olmsted, Branch Brook’s initial visionary, and the mind behind several notable urban spaces, including Central Park in Manhattan.
East Newark based photographer Jonathan Fernandes captured scenes from a punk/goth show at 407 Mulberry Street.
This photo also from Jonathan Fernandes. The show took place in late February.
This photo, “In the Woods” by Diane Allford, is part of Tiffany Salas’s “subject: WILDFLOWER.”, which focuses on the delicacy of the beauty in freedom. The wildflower serves as a metaphor for strength, endurance, and the power of resilience. This photo series is a part of a diptych entitled Homage To MAMA. The art direction, wardrobe, and production were done by Salas, who is a Newark native and the founder of Newark-based Chiffani Brands.
North Arlington based photographer Michael Araujo returns yearly to his family’s native Ironbound for Our Lady of Fatima Parish’s annual Palm Sunday Passion Procession. This photograph was taken at the 2024 procession this past March.
