West Ward Councilman Joseph McCallum has pled guilty to Federal corruption charges. Soliciting bribes and kickbacks in exchange for development projects is an absolutely shameful violation of the public trust. This is especially true considering Newark City Council members already receive a salary of $95,000 a year for part-time work, while the number is around $36,180 in neighboring Jersey City. It’s also good to keep in mind Newark’s median household income is about $40,000 a year, and the staggering levels of economic neglect many parts of the West Ward still face. Privileged members of our political class stealing from the poorest among us is not only as low as you can go, but it also places barriers on badly needed investment that is helping improve people’s lives. If Newark is to continue moving forward, we must remain vigilant in calling out and fighting against corruption!

Be sure to keep an eye on the race between Lyndon Brown, Oscar James II, Lavita Johnson, Dupre “DoItAll” Kelly, Michelle Lyn Middleton, and Chigozie Onyema to replace McCallum in May.
