Springtime in the City!

There really wasn’t that much of a winter—climate change will kill us all—but we’re still ready for the magical trappings of spring! Here are some current and upcoming events to look for:

  • If you’re looking for Pan-Latin American cuisine downtown, Salsa Restaurant and Lounge is open on Broad Street.
  • Elan Café offers a variety in pastries and sandwiches to Halsey Street.
  • A major marijuana café franchise that counts the Wu-Tang Clan’s Raekown among its owners has encountered resistance to its plan to come to Broad and Market. Looks like we’ll have to continue buying weed without getting a receipt there.
  • The owners of new-school Ironbound favorite Sihana present their twist on modern Italian far with Five Corners Ristorante.
  • North Ward staple Taino’s Kitchen has expanded to include at Halsey Street location.
  • Ramen Gami is back from a kitchen fire that closed it for three years.
  • Peak bloom for the 2023 Cherry Blossom Festival in Branch Brook is expected to run from April 1–5.
  • The People’s Organization for Progress (POP) is commemorating the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr with a march demanding further actions on police reform, a task force for reparations, voting rights protections, and mandating the teaching of Black history in public schools on April 4. The demonstrations begin at 5 PM at his statue at 495 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd.
  • Brick City Rowing is having its first ever gala on April 14.
  • Akwaaba Gallery presents Armisey Smith’s “Golden” until April 15.
  • “SEARCHING.” a solo exhibition by 2022 Artist in Residence Damien Davis is on view at Project for Empty Space until April 8.
  • The extravagance of Art Ball 2023 will be at The Newark Museum of Art on May 13.
  • The 20th Annual Gallery Aferro Art Auction and Party is on May 20.
  • The Newark Public Library has launched Made@NPL, a community that provides all Newarkers access to in-demand equipment, technology, and software, to use at no cost. Made@NPL supports creative entrepreneurs with business reference services and programming related to creativity, entrepreneurship, and making things.
