Mixology: Bandmandrill

Newark has always been a producer of major hip-hop talent and new school trap. Drill and battle rappers have mastered using SoundCloud and social media to reach scores of people before signing their first record deals. One of the new leaders of the pack is 19-year-old South Ward product Bandmandrill, whose 2021 track “Heartbroken” attracted millions of listens via YouTube and Spotify, while also getting singled out for Pitchfork Magazine’s “New Rap Song of Day.” Our favorite recent work of his is another exciting blend of drill and Jersey club that forms the base of his viral up-tempo banger “I am Newark.”

We suggest enjoying Bandmandrill’s rapid rise with a refreshing non-alcholoic Mango Mule:

4-5 slices of cucumber
1 oz honey syrup
1.5 oz mango puree
1.5 oz fresh lime juice
1.5 oz ginger beer

Muddle cucumber and honey syrup in the bottom of a cocktail shaker. Add the mango puree and lime juice and shake with ice vigorously. Strain into a copper mug. Top with ginger beer and stir.
